Fridge cover for bowls

After the covers for my cake moulds I showed in my last post. I wanted also covers for things I store in the fridge. Making efforts to reduce the plastic waste I don't like to use lots of wrapping film, but still you can't store everything in open bowls, as the content might take the taste of other things in the fridge. 

So I made a set of covers from oil cloth in different sizes for the bowls and cans I am using the most.

They are so easy to make. I cut out a circle that is about 5cm in diameter larger than the bowl I want to cover. I measure the elastic stretched around the bowl and sew it already in a loop. Then I sew it stretched on to the oil cloth circle from the inside keeping a 5mm distance to the edge.

I even found orange elastic that matches the oil cloth.

I remember my mom had covers like those when I had been a girl. They are washable and reusable and I don't know why they went out of fashion.

Cover for baking pan

So many flies around and the last time I transported a cake to a cookout the wind blew several times the towel away that I put over the baking pan as a cover. So yesterday I made some cotton covers that hold onto the mould. 

I choose cotton fabric so I can even cover the cake when it is still warm without the humidity condensing at the cover.

Yummy crumble - And the flies and bees can't have it any more!

The first one for the big baking pan has a tunnel from bias-tape on the inside edge where I put the elastic in.

This is working fine, but I thought it might be a little stiff for a smaller diameter, so for the smaller pan I just folded the edge in and sewed the elastic onto the inside while stretching it. This works also, but isn't looking as neat. I should look for some color matching elastic.

To have a set I made a third cover for my tarte-mould too!

This summer I really haven't done much sewing! With this little project I finish the break.

Squirt pictures

Over pinterest I found this very cool technic for kids to make squirt pictures. I tried it out with my boys and the friend of younger son and it had been lots of fun!

Its food color diluted in water and the children are using old injections to shoot the color onto the paper. It took a while until they found the right distance to the paper and the right quantity of color for each shot. 

I think the results are amazing. This are three pictures younger son wants to hang up in his room. 

There are others where the color drifted a lot and on those we added some drawings with a black pencil by following the outline of certain colors. Looking a little bit like maps now. I cut out a few parts and glued them on carton for having kind of a frame. Unfortunately the carton don't want to lay entirely flat for a picture. In reality they are not as bended and the frame lines are straight.

Unfortunately the red food color is becoming rose on paper. All in all the colors are much more intense when seeing them against the light. I could imagine them pretty as window hangers too.

From some of the test pictures that are not so impressive I cut out the best parts and glued them on post cards.

This kind of kids art I can only recomend to everybody! It is fun (also for adults), the results are very cool and you can do a lot of things with those pictures.

Lions shorts

Hello again! Back from vacation, but still in summer-chilling-mode as the school only starts beginning of September. Hope you are also enjoying a bright summer.

Just before leaving on vacations, I made a pair of shorts for a little boy that has been wearing those fish-pants I showed in this post for about a year! Even in winter! If someone values so much my gifts he is entitled to another one. So here is the pair of lion-shorts I made for him:

I hope those will be used equally often as the fish pants!

Kids entertainment bags

Just in time for our next tour, I finished two bags for my boys, where they can stock their entertainment stuff for vacation tours on car. I don't think they will work for flights.

Those bags are 28 by 22cm and 12cm deep. Inside there are several compartments to keep the stuff in order. One soft lined part is for a tablett PC - for long car rides (back home to germany it's about 1100km) they can have our old ones. Otherwise they have earphones to listen to audio books without bothering us and without discussions between them what to hear. You won't believe how relaxing it is since we do it like that! Then there is still lots of space to take books and games and whatever they think they need for vacation. It's interesting to see the different priorities! :-)

The first one I made for little son from old jeans combined with an alien-on-tour fabric. Inside I even recycled a back pocket from a jeans as side pocket. My little already carried it a lot around and packed and unpacked it. For the photos I only kept a few things inside.

Only today I finished the other one for elder son. He chose his colors himself and so I had to deal with black and red. It looks much more grown up though. The inside is the same only I transformed one devider into a zip pocket.

Let's see if those bags keeps a little order in all the stuff we have to take with us :-)
